How to prevent gas asphyxiation in sewage treatment facility
In a large city with a huge population, there is a sewage treatment facility for every apartment or industrial complex. Recently, sewage and wastewater are treated together with stronger chemicals and methods. As a result, gas poisoning accidents often occur in wastewater treatment plants. Generally, hydrogen sulfide(H2S) is generated in excess in the sewage treatment facilities. Hydrogen sulfide is a toxic, colorless gas that smells like rotten eggs, and is frequently generated in large quantities.
Time-weighted average (TWA) exposure standards indicate that safe levels of hydrogen sulfide gas concentrations should not exceed 10 ppm to avoid affecting workers 8 hours a day in hazardous work environments. Exceeding this can cause severe eye pain, and inhalation can paralyze the central nervous system or cause death by suffocation.
